About Event
This session offers an engaging introduction to the visual language of Islamic art and architecture, guiding participants through the key features commonly found in Islamic buildings and artworks. Through accessible explanations and examples, the event explores important terms used in Islamic art and architecture, including their Arabic terminologies, and highlights essential elements of mosques and other structures such as domes, courtyards, arches, fountains, and decorative details. Participants will also discover the rich decorative traditions of Islamic art such as Islamic geometric patterns, floral designs, calligraphy, and tiled surfaces and gain a deeper appreciation of the central role of Arabic calligraphy. By exploring how art, function, and spirituality are closely connected in Islamic design, the session equips attendees with the confidence to recognise and appreciate Islamic art and architecture when visiting historic sites, museums, or exhibitions.
